WALTER STRAUS, MD, MPH, FCPP
Dr. Straus serves as Global Director Scientific Affairs at Merck & Co., Inc., working in the areas of scientific strategy and research policy, focusing primarily upon infectious diseases. He has spent is career collaborating with scientists throughout the world to advance the development and appropriate use of drugs and vaccines to address major public health challenges.
An internist and gastroenterologist-hepatologist by training Dr. Straus is a former Commissioned Office of the US Public Health Service, for which he served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention [CDC]), focusing upon prevention and control of infectious diseases.
Dr. Straus is actively involved in the global health community, where he regularly teaches and mentors in medicine, public health and bioethics. Dr. Straus has authored or coauthored more than 150 articles, abstracts and chapters. He serves as a technical advisor to the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality, and is on the Steering Committee of the Harvard Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Network, and is a former Chair of the Board of Directors of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
