Brenda Ruotolo is the Associate Vice President for Human Reserch Protection and leads the Human Research Protection Office (HRPO) at Columbia University in the City of New York. The HRPO provides administrative and regulatory support to the University’s seven Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and oversees the institution’s AAHRPP-accredited Human Research Protection Program. Brenda has been at Columbia University since 2003, serving as the Associate Director of the IRB office for 9 years before being appointed as the Executive Director in 2013 and the AVP in 2020. Brenda started her research compliance career in 1995 at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, serving as the administrator of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and assistant to the IRB director. In January 2000, she became the Sponsored Programs Administrator at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, with primary responsibility for oversight of IRB functions for research on multiple campuses, before being recruited to Columbia to launch the third of the University’s IRBs. At present, Brenda oversees a staff of 29 and a human research portfolio of approximately 7600 studies conducted by researchers from all of Columbia’s campuses at both domestic and international sites.
