Benjamin Silverman, M.D. is the Senior IRB Chair at Mass General Brigham, Human Research Affairs. Dr. Silverman has served in the roles of IRB Vice Chair and IRB Chair in the Mass General Brigham system since 2011. He is currently the Chair of the Mass General Brigham Embryonic Stem Cell Oversight Committee (ESCRO), Director of Ethics for the Institute for Technology in Psychiatry at McLean Hospital, and at Harvard Medical School serves as an Instructor in Psychiatry and Faculty Member at the Center for Bioethics.
Dr. Silverman’s interests in medical ethics center on research ethics, in particular pertaining to research conducted with vulnerable populations, and the ethical dilemmas that emerging information technologies present to clinicians and researchers. His recent work has focused on applying principles of ethics and professionalism to digital phenotyping, including understanding how to define health information and to protect third party information collected in this context, as well as how to adequately consent research subjects and manage returning research results to subjects for these types of studies.
Dr. Silverman received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, completed his psychiatry residency at the MGH McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Training program, and completed sub-specialty fellowship training in addiction psychiatry through Mass General Brigham. He additionally completed fellowship training with the Center for Bioethics, Harvard Medical School.
